The digital landscape is constantly evolving, and with it, so are the ways illicit activities are conducted. The Lincoln Community Coalition is committed to keeping our community informed about emerging trends in drug activity, and a recent concerning development involves the use of emojis.
The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has released a reference guide highlighting common emoji codes used in conjunction with illegal drugs. This guide is a critical tool for parents, caregivers, educators, and anyone who interacts with young people and technology.
Why Emojis?
Emojis offer a seemingly innocent way for dealers and buyers to communicate discreetly on social media and e-commerce platforms. These platforms are easily accessible to anyone with a smartphone, making it easier to buy and sell fake prescription pills laced with deadly substances like fentanyl and methamphetamine.
Common Emoji Codes
The DEA’s guide reveals that certain emojis have taken on new, dangerous meanings. For example:
- 💊 is used to represent Percocet & Oxycodone.
- 💰💰 can signal dealer advertising.
- Other emojis represent drugs like Meth, Xanax, Adderall, Heroin, Cocaine, MDMA/Molly, Mushrooms, Cough Syrup, and Marijuana.
It’s important to note that this list is not exhaustive and represents common examples found in DEA investigations.
One Pill Can Kill
This new trend is especially alarming considering the rise in fake prescription pills, which can have deadly consequences. The DEA’s campaign #ONEPILLCANKILL underscores the severity of this issue.
