As a way to empower local teens, the Lincoln Community Coalition of Nevada and NyE Communities Coalition held a teen night on Aug. 15, teaching teens to exercise their critical thinking skills related to peer pressure, specifically around the topic of drugs and substances.
Around 50 teens and kids attended the “glow party” event, held at Alamo’s Splash Pad. The event included party favors that glowed in the dark with the help of black lights, music, snacks, and water toys. The event was dedicated to teens within the neighborhood, with a surprising amount of younger kids attending the event.
The Bubble Buggy and La Cocinita Goyis were on hand for the whole community to purchase food and soft drinks.
Coalition staff members Charli Miller, Crystal Dineley and Robin Mangum assisted the large-turnout event and quickly accommodated the event for all kids that attended, teaching alternative methods to providing safety and arming teens with methods of saying “No” to peer pressure. The event shared a message of protecting oneself from the dangers of peer pressure involving drug and substance abuse.
While attempting to teach them how to get out of sticky situations, Miller shared, “They (the kids) provided many different responses and many shared some great ideas.”
In a continued effort to provide a safe and drug-free community for local youth, the coalition is hosting a pool party for teens in Pioche, Caliente and Panaca on Aug. 29 at the Pioche Pool.
