The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows Servicing Lincoln County is preparing to host a series of summer activities. A summer kickoff is scheduled for May 24. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., members and families are invited to stop in for an open house and family game night. The kickoff will feature a cakewalk, a mac n’ cheese contest, family games and a bounce house.
The club aims to help satisfy the need for safe and educational entertainment and social opportunities for youth in Lincoln County. Parties, field trips and theme days are all on the May through August schedule. Teen clubs are being launched for June and July. With the help of community volunteers, staff will be offering various four- and five-week sessions. Club sessions include options for Photography and Digital Design, Science Exploration, Home Ec, Crafting, Financial Literacy, Short Stories and Creative writing and several other subjects.
Doors will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through the summer. Holiday closures will occur on May 27 as well as July 4 and 5. Staff will be traveling to Tonopah for a summer training session May 28 through 31. The club will be closed during that week.
Leading up to summer vacation, Boys & Girls Club staff will be participating in several community events. Site coordinator Rodney Balser will be putting his DJ skills to use and hosting a coloring contest during the May 11 Pioche Safety Event. Staff will also have a photo booth at the Silver Cafe, free balloons and prizes in the scavenger hunt. Activities, a workshop and a bounce house will be presented during the weeklong end of year activities at Meadow Valley Middle School.
“We just want to make sure the community knows we are here and we are ready for an awesome season,” says Balser.
The coordinator says he hopes to see an interest in a soccer program and the potential return of flag football in August. “Our sports options are going to be based on volunteers and community involvement,” Balser shared, “If we can get the coaches, we will play the games.” To inquire about coaching positions, email panaca@bgctm.org.
